Best batting drills to improve footwork for intermediate players
I've been playing cricket for 3 years now at the intermediate level, and my footwork has been holding back my batting. I get stuck on the crease and end up playing shots from awkward positions.
I've been trying some drills from YouTube but nothing seems to be sticking. Has anyone here worked specifically on footwork issues? Would love to hear what worked for you — especially for improving the back foot drive and the movement to play spinners.
I'm currently doing sessions twice a week and have about 30 minutes per session I can dedicate to specific drills. Any recommendations from coaches or more experienced players would be super helpful!

Great question, Arjun! Footwork is indeed the foundation of all good batting. Here are the drills I recommend for your situation:
**1. Shadow Batting with Marker Spots** — Place colored dots 2–3 feet in front and behind your crease. Practice moving to each dot before playing your shot. Do 50 reps per session.
**2. Cone Ladder Drills** — Use an agility ladder to build fast, precise footwork. Even 10 minutes of this daily will show results in 4–6 weeks.
**3. Front Foot Defense Repetitions** — Pick one delivery line and hit 20 front-foot defenses in a row, focusing purely on getting your foot to the pitch of the ball.
The key is muscle memory through repetition. Your 30-minute slot is perfect for this.
The shadow batting with marker spots that Coach Rahul mentioned is gold! I struggled with the same issue 8 months ago and this drill changed everything for me. Took about 3 weeks of consistent practice to really feel the difference.
I'd also add — film yourself from the side angle while batting. Sometimes you can't feel what you're doing wrong but seeing yourself on video makes it immediately obvious. I was surprised how far back I was on my crease without even realizing it!
Thank you all so much! Starting with the shadow batting drills today. Will report back in 2 weeks with how it's going. Really appreciate the Coach's detailed breakdown!
